Why the Ratcatchers?

There are various tales about the origin of the name,
“The Ratcatchers”, but the most plausible is:
When the building was converted to an inn in the late 1800’s the first people to stay at the inn were the local ratcatchers.

The “Rats” as locals have always called it, had a wall running round the yard with a pump and a skittle alley, a butchers shop, and in the 1950’s a bowling green behind the main building.

The row of houses that once stood alongside the pub called “The Ratcatchers Row” was demolished in the 1960’s.
During the 1970’s the pub was empty for 2 years and was renamed the Gay-Dunn for a brief period when the owners were fans of stage act Frankie Dunn and Rosie Gay.
