Why the Ratcatchers?
There are various tales about the origin
of the name,
“The Ratcatchers”, but the most plausible
is:
When the building was converted to an inn in the late
1800’s the first people to stay at the inn were the
local ratcatchers. |

The “Rats” as locals have always called
it, had a wall running round the yard with a pump and a
skittle alley, a butchers shop, and in the 1950’s a bowling green behind the main building. |

The row of houses that once stood
alongside the pub called “The Ratcatchers Row” was
demolished in the 1960’s.
During the 1970’s the pub was empty for 2 years and
was renamed the Gay-Dunn for a brief period when the
owners were fans of stage act Frankie Dunn and Rosie
Gay.
